Let us not forget 2020, but also remember your values

To all our members, 2020 is a year we can never forget. For both good and bad, I believe also believe that as individuals we have not only become more independent in our ways of working but also become more dependant on each other. This faceless enemy has taught us about values that we all have but have not put them to practice.
I think the value of a standard education has not only taught us the value of life but what it means to have an exceptional career in these challenging times. If I look at the construction industry over the past 8 months, particularly in South Africa and other African countries, there has very little change in the way they work, apart from health & safety we have not to see any advancing technologies and improved standards yet.

Those individuals, entrepreneurs, and companies who discovered the benefits of digital transformation have also seen the never-ending learning of improvement and that means educating yourself and continuing to develop even greater mastery.
Not just in technology but in leadership and promoting the values that technology has given us to transform ourselves.

Remember this, formal education gives you the basic principles to walk, if you want to keep moving forward, you have been giving the skills and understanding to improve your skills to learn how to run. To learn how to run you have to self-educate and that means you have to change your psychology. BIM, digital engineering, digital construction, whatever you want to call it , means you have to start thinking about the value it offers others, the old way of working doesn’t work anymore.

Covid 19 pandemic was an opportunity for those to play catchup with those that had already started their journey into the new ways of working. This pandemic has given us all a 2nd chance to reinvent ourselves, not restart, you have the skills and the access to an infinite amount of online learning – the reality is, this is the greatest time to be alive. If you learning you educating, you developing valuable skills needed within our industry and society. So instead of complaining, you lost your job, maybe losing your job, or hanging around for this epidemic to just go away.

It’s time for you to ask yourself,  where are your valuable skill sets in the marketplace? and how can you work harder on yourself? The one thing that I have learned in my 30 years in the working field, is developing myself, that’s the most important investment that no one can take from me. It is not just about the technology, the process or the standards that we develop within our built environment. It’s about how to engage with people, the traditionalist, the critic, the laggard,  the expert, and the rookie.

” We must maintain our values and  understand the needs of other professionals in our industry while still applying our technological and leadership skills”

Learning to speak and influence all your ideas and your vision will only die on your lips if you are not able to influence others and learn from others.
The old saying that every company will ask you in an interview “ Where will you be in  five years or where do you want to be in five years?”
The person you will be in the future is based on everything you do today and leaders you hang around with every day but more so the people you listen to and their opinions.

All that information you absorb, be it positive or negative will affect your future the projects you currently on, the future projects you will be on. All of this will affect your future on a visual and energy level that you have consumed.
The information you feed your mind will shape your future if all you do is take in history then guess what your future is gonna be?

What’s gonna be your 2021 map?  Know in your heart that only you can change your future and if someone has done it for you already or made it become a reality. Then it’s time for you to change someone else’s and if dream big, help us change an industry.
The power of an enthusiastic industry is a much better idea than individual experts or companies that continue to voice their accomplishments and often have their own ingrained selfish ideas.

One tree can make a thousand matches, but one match can burn a thousand trees. The power that comes from all industry enthusiast, will allow us to unite from all parts of this African continent, that we come from all race, we come from all professional disciples and gender, the power of that diversity comes together and makes us that much more powerful as an industry especially during these challenging and draconian times. From there on we together become enthusiastic and build back better!

But above all, remember the values of fairness, kindness accountability, respect and courage prevail and if we continue to practice those things right now and going into 2021, we will get out of this pandemic but it will also be a time that brings us all together and unifies us an industry that is ready to engage and share these ideas and address the issues as one

So let us all go enjoy some lemonade out of this lemon and hope that together we all go into 2021 freshened up and STRONGER and whatever you want to accomplish, be exceptional!
